Chapter Fourteen

After Lucille unloaded the sleeping Noah into the guest room, she settled at her desk to put in a few more hours of work. She’d barely opened her computer when her phone announced an incoming video call. Seeing it was Simon, she answered.

Simon’s face filled the screen, giving her a close-up of his meticulously wrinkle-free skin. “What’s this I hear about you becoming friends with Sylvia Stanton?” he asked by way of a greeting.

Lucille was never surprised when Simon knew things he couldn’t possibly know. But she found the habit annoying, particularly in this case because his informant had to have been Noah. “Did he text you or something?” She didn’t bother to explain who she meant.

“As I’ve told you many times, Lucy, the way I got the information is not important—”

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

Lucille raised an eyebrow at her uncle. She had her phone propped in a holder as she scrolled through her email, looking for interesting subject lines. “You can’t honestly think I’d tell you about a meeting with a client.”

It was another of Simon’s rules of spin doctoring—never tell people you care about what you’re doing.

“No, but now I know and, I repeat, you’re friends with Sylvia Stanton?” Simon was walking somewhere, most likely around his house. He wouldn’t be talking this openly if he were anywhere he could be overheard.

“I don’t like this, Noah texting you about my meetings.”

“He’s my protégé.”

“I never texted you what I was doing when I was your protégé,” Lucille wasn’t about to let this go.

Simon glared at her. Then he broke. “Okay, fine. I never asked Noah to text me, he just does it. He’s into this working-together thing. And since he’s keeping me informed of your budding friendship with Sylvia, I’m disinclined to reprimand him about just yet.”

Lucille laughed. “I hate to burst your bubble, but your so-called protégé is currently sleeping off his day drinking in my guest room.”

Simon continued to glare at her. “Oh, please, like you’ve never done that.”

She was about to say she hadn’t but then remembered that one time when she’d been a young spin doctor, still learning the trade, and she’d slammed a pitcher of margaritas to impress a new client. The client had been impressed. Her stomach had not.

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, fine. Sylvia isn’t who I thought she was. Turns out, when she’s not dating Michel and taking a bunch of drugs, she’s actually a cold and calculating bitch.”

“Surprising,” said Simon, his glare finally dissipating now he’d gotten what he wanted.

“I thought so.”

“In that case, send me back my protégé.” He paused. “Unless you want to keep him?”

It was her turn to glare. “As soon as he’s not comatose, he’ll be on the next plane back to you.”

She hung up. For some reason, all the men, possibly with the exception of Michel since she hadn’t spoken to him directly in a bit, were intent on making her and Noah a thing. Which, now she wasn’t angry with him, she didn’t hate.

The facts were these:

Noah was hot.
